Army
The British Army defends the UK and its interests. It is the land based armed forces of this country. Its purpose means that it will fight in wars and conflicts both on British soil or oversees. As well as carrying out tasks designated to it by the Government, it may also be used as a peacekeeper if required to do so by the United Nations (UN).
In the UK, the army has a regimental system, which has been in place since the 19th century; this means that the army is split into specific units. It is also hierarchical with rankings and divisions, so that those in major units lead smaller ones.
In many countries, the army is distinct from other armed forces in that it specifically refers to the army that operates on land (as opposed to the air force). As a result, some countries refer to the army as the ‘land army’, though in general terms the word ‘army’ is still used to refer to this.
The army is an important part of the makeup of any country and is vital for its protection.
